(August 20, 2023) Thousands of British Columbians have been evacuated because of the wildfires burning in our province and many people have lost their homes but what is Métis Nation British Columbia (MNBC) doing to help MNBC Citizens cope with this terrible disaster? Good question.
Thousands of families and individuals, including many Métis Citizens have been impacted by the hundreds of wildfires burning in many areas of British Columbia. Being evacuated is a scary and stressful experience. Not only are the evacuees worrying about whether they will have a home to go back to and when they might be able to return home but they also have to worry about where they will be staying if they can’t return home for several weeks. Many will be worrying about their jobs, their budgets and how they will be looking after the needs of their families. This is very worrying and nerve-wracking for these individuals.
BC Métis Leader and former MNBC President Clara Morin Dal Col asks, “Where is MNBC when you need them?” She says, “MNBC needs to step up to the plate and offer emergency assistance to MNBC Citizens who need a helping hand in this time of need. It could be in the form of emergency financial assistance to help them with extra-ordinary costs that they are facing because of being evacuated that are not covered by the provincial government. It could also be in the form of assisting in the coordination of potential long-term accommodation for Métis families or maybe it is simply having an Emergency Assistance desk where staff can ask callers ‘How may we help you’ and then help to address their needs.”
Ms. Morin Dal Col says, “This Board of Directors spends tens of thousands of dollars on their own salaries and travel expenses, and millions more hiring more staff and consultants and buying land, but where are they when Métis Citizens affected by the wildfires could really use a helping hand?”
Ms. Morin Dal Col, who recently announced that she will be seeking the Presidency of Métis Nation British Columbia (MNBC) in the 2024 election, says, “The provincial government is providing some assistance to evacuees but many families and individuals will need some extra help. This Board needs to understand that in times of emergencies like this their first responsibility is to help to look after the needs of our Citizens.”
