(September 22, 2022) In just a few short years, the number of staff at Métis Nation British Columbia (MNBC) has ballooned to more than 180 people, from about 60 in 2019, and the budget to pay for all of the staff and their training skyrocketed this year to $20.5 million, a huge jump from $13.9 million last year.
The latest staffing numbers of “…more than 180…” are revealed in the annual report that has been prepared for MNBC’s upcoming annual general meeting. Little information is provided about what the 180 individuals are doing nor is any information provided regarding how many are Métis. The staffing numbers have tripled in just three years, with new positions being created at all levels.
At the same time, more people at MNBC are each being paid more money. The audited financial statements for the organization for the year ending March 31, 2022 show the number of individuals making more than $75,000 has more than doubled to 26 from 11 the year previous.
BC Métis Leader and MNBC’s former President Clara Morin Dal Col calls the huge growth in staff and salaries mind-boggling and unjustified. She said, “How can this Board of Directors justify the enormous increase in staff and salaries when many community Presidents who contribute a lot of hours each year helping out community members and citizens in so many different ways, do not receive any sort of a stipend or remuneration.”
Ms. Morin Dal Col asked, “What exactly do these more than 180 employees do? How many are assistants to assistants and coordinators for this and that? Instead of spending millions of dollars on hiring more staff, MNBC should be actually addressing the real needs of Métis people in British Columbia, especially families struggling to make ends meet and our seniors, many of whom are living in inferior conditions.”
The former MNBC President added, “Tripling the number of staff, and paying out higher salaries for a large number of individuals is not a responsible use of public dollars by a non-profit organization. They are spending money like it will never stop flowing from the federal government. This Board needs to be held accountable for every dollar that is spent.”
