MNBC Missing From Key Meeting with Federal Minister Regarding Métis Claims and Other Critical Issues

(March 29, 2022) Métis Nation British Columbia (MNBC) was nowhere to be seen at a meeting with federal Minister of Crown Indigenous Relations Marc Miller held on March 21, 2022.

The meeting, which included discussions about the all-important issues of Métis claims and federal recognition of self-government agreements and other critical issues, only included the Presidents of Métis Nation Ontario, Métis Nation – Saskatchewan and Métis Nation Alberta. Representation from Métis Nation British Columbia was nonexistent.

BC Métis Leader Clara Morin Dal Col said today, “MNBC should be attending all meetings with federal Ministers when Métis issues are being discussed, especially with the federal Minister of Crown Indigenous Relations. Such meetings are imperative to be able to raise critical issues such as s.35 Métis rights including harvesting rights, children and family issues, and Métis health issues, but MNBC was missing in action at this most recent meeting.”

“When I was President of MNBC, both President David Chartrand of the Manitoba Métis Federation and Clément Chartier, our then President of the Métis National Council always made sure that I was part of any meeting with federal ministers when issues that were important to our Métis citizens here in British Columbia, were being discussed”, said Ms. Morin Dal Col

“Attending such meetings is an important role and responsibility of a President, but it appears that this MNBC Board doesn’t think so”, added the BC Métis Leader.
