(February 23, 2022) Métis Nation British Columbia (MNBC) went looking for a $100 million dollars from the Province of British Columbia but got nothing in yesterday’s provincial budget.
BC Métis Leader Clara Morin Dal Col said, “All MNBC had to do was take a look at the financial demands on the provincial government resulting from last year’s horrific wildfires including the loss of Lytton and the terrible loss of lives, homes and farms in last November’s heavy rains and floods, and the earlier costs of dealing with the Covid-19 pandemic, and one would quickly realize that it was unrealistic to be asking for $100 million.”
“For a non-profit organization that is rolling in money from the federal government as a result of funding agreements that I, along with Manitoba Métis Federation President David Chartrand and former Métis National Council President Clément Chartier helped negotiate, it makes one wonder why MNBC thought they would be entitled to an extra $100 million,” said Morin Dal Col.
The BC Métis Leader said, “In scrutinizing MNBC’s $100 million ask, one wonders what is MNBC doing with the millions of dollars they are already receiving each year from the Government of Canada. For example MNBC already receives more than $4 million a year from Canada for governance and operational capacity, but yet they asked the provincial government for an additional $2.25 million for each of the next three years for organizational capacity building. No provincial government, with all the demands they’re facing, is going to give MNBC money like that.”
Morin Dal Col said, “Instead of hiring more staff, and the Board paying themselves more money for salaries, committee work and portfolios, MNBC needs to spend the millions of dollars they already receive more wisely and be accountable for it.”
The BC Métis Leader added that after taking a break with family for the last few months to deal with Covid-19 effects and other matters, she is back and resuming her role of ensuring that our Nation, our culture and who we are as Métis people is protected for many years to come.
