(June 10, 2022) Board members of Métis Nation British Columbia (MNBC) chalked up nearly $100,000 in travel, accommodations and per diems during the last fiscal year, even though the Covid-19 pandemic severely limited travel and face to face meetings for a large part of the fiscal year. In addition to nearly $80,000 in travel-related expenses, Board members claimed a total of an additional $18,000 in per diems (meals and incidentals paid each day when away from home). The nearly $100,000 in travel, accommodations and per diems was incurred between April 1, 2021 and March 31, 2022.
The largest claimant of expenses was Lissa Smith the President of MNBC who rang up more than $27,000 in travel, accommodations and per diems during the fiscal year, while the next biggest claimant was regional director Deb Fisher (Reg. 4) at almost $14,000.
During the last fiscal year, only one Board meeting was held face to face, while all the rest were online virtual meetings which involved no travel. The association’s last annual general meeting in September 2021 was also held virtually because of the pandemic issue and the MNGA this year in March was also held virtually resulting in no travel.
BC Métis Leader Clara Morin Dal Col said, “How is it possible to rack up nearly $100,000 in travel related expenses when almost all Board meetings and other association meetings are held virtually where no travel-related expenses should be claimed”?
Ms. Morin Dal Col said, “The pandemic severely restricted face to face meetings of all kinds for a large part of last year, so how can these Board members of a non-profit society incur so much in travel-related expenses.”
She said, “These Board members need to be held accountable for the nearly $100,000 in travel-related expenses.”
