(March 17, 2023) The current President of Métis Nation British Columbia (MNBC) incurred travel and accommodation expenses for the last 9 months of 2022 that were more than triple for the same period in 2021. The figures were included in a report that MNBC is required to post each year.
Lissa Smith incurred travel and accommodation costs of $41,760 for just the last 9 months of last year, while at the same time claiming per diems (for meals and incidentals) for the same period in the amount of $8613. All expenses and per diems paid out are tax free. In addition, during the same 9 months the current President received $133,072 in salary and remuneration. After the Board voted themselves a hefty salary increase beginning last October, the President’s salary is now pegged at $150,000 per year.
The Vice-President of MNBC rang up nearly $30,000 in travel and accommodation expenses, along with more than $6000 in per diems. The next highest expense claiming Board Director for the last nine months of 2022 was the Region Four Director who incurred travel and accommodation expenses of more than $16,000, plus per diems of $3863.
In total for just the last nine months of last year, the 11 MNBC Board members incurred travel expenses of $165,739 and per diems of more than $38,000, and drew salaries in excess of $800,000.
Consulting and professional fees were left out of the report, even though they have been included in previous reports.
BC Métis Leader and former MNBC President Clara Morin Dal Col said, “Incurring travel, accommodation and per diem costs of more than $200,000 in just nine months is unprecedented on top of the more than $800,000 in salaries for these 11 Board members.”
Ms. Morin Dal Col said, “While many of our Métis Citizens are struggling to meet the ever increasing costs of feeding their families, the MNBC Board members are spending tens of thousands of dollars travelling all over the place.” She also asked, “Why have they failed to reveal how much they’re spending on consulting and professional fees?
