Meetings and Credit Cards

(May 29, 2022) A candidate for the Vice-Presidential position of Métis Nation British Columbia (MNBC) attended a meeting of the Board of Directors less than 24 hours after polls closed. Walter Mineault attended a virtual meeting of the Board on April 28, 2022 as VP – Elect just hours after polls had closed for the position the night before.

Given that all Board members must swear an Oath of Office prior to serving in any capacity, did the new VP-Elect swear the Oath before participating in the meeting? The Oath of Office also contains a requirement of confidentiality in all matters “…committed and revealed to me…” When was he officially sworn in? What would have happened, if the unsuccessful candidate for VP had challenged the results of the election? Why the big rush to have the new VP-Elect attend the meeting?

And what about credit cards for Board members? Here are six questions that deserve to be answered:

· Do all Board members have credit cards?

· What are the credit card limits? $1000? $5000? $10,000?

· Are there any rules about the use of credit cards?

· What can they be used for and what can they not be used for?

· Who checks the credit card transactions to ensure compliance with any rules?

BC Métis Leader Clara Morin Dal Col said, “MNBC, as a non-profit society is receiving millions of dollars a year from government and MNBC Citizens have every right to know how those dollars are being spent, and that includes costs incurred using credit cards.”

Ms. Morin Dal Col said, “It is all about accountability and transparency. We haven’t seen a report from the Treasurer for months.”

She said, “I will continue to ask questions of these 11 Board members because they ultimately are responsible for the expenditure of all MNBC dollars”
