(November 21, 2021) BC Métis Leader Clara Morin Dal Col said, “The thousands of British Columbians impacted by the flooding and highway washouts resulting from the record rainfall last weekend are in my thoughts and prayers every day.” She said, “The loss of lives of the four people killed in the slide on Highway 99 between Pemberton and Lillooet was especially tragic and my condolences go out to their families and friends.”
Ms. Morin Dal Col said, “It is everyone’s worst nightmare to experience such natural disasters and to lose your home and your livelihood as in the case of the farmers in the Fraser Valley losing cattle, chickens and other animals. The massive storm also had a devastating impact on residents in Merritt and Princeton, including many Métis Citizens who have had to leave their homes because of overflowing rivers and streams. I hope and pray that everyone stays safe, and will be able to return to their homes as soon as it is safe to do so.”
“Many Métis people are going to need a helping hand to get their homes and lives back to normal, and I wonder where Métis Nation British Columbia (MNBC) is in this challenging situation,” said the BC Métis Leader. She said, “This organization is sitting on millions of dollars from the federal government which I helped to negotiate and now MNBC should be stepping up to help out our Métis Citizens, in this time of great need.” Ms. Morin Dal Col added, “The MNBC Board is severely challenged in understanding its priorities for Métis people in British Columbia, but that doesn’t appear to be a problem when it comes to their own compensation.”
