(June 15, 2022) It is like a story from Ripley’s Believe It or Not – Métis Nation British Columbia (MNBC) is seeking $84.2 million from the provincial government, even though they are already receiving millions of dollars each year from the federal government.
Their latest pitch for dollars was made to the BC Legislature’s Select Standing Committee on Finance and Government Services as the Committee received submissions for the 2023 provincial budget. The Committee hears from dozens of different organizations and others seeking funding from the provincial government.
The MNBC submission says the money would be used for a number of different areas including governance funding, capacity funding for communities, and housing and homelessness. MNBC already receives several million dollars each year from Ottawa for governance and capacity funding, and millions of dollars for housing and homelessness and other operational areas, all of which were negotiated by the former President of MNBC – Clara Morin Dal Col.
Ms. Morin Dal Col said, “MNBC is taking in millions of dollars each year from Ottawa through multi-year funding agreements which I along with President David Chartrand of the Manitoba Métis Federation negotiated, but yet this is still not enough for this Board of Directors”.
She said, “Just a few months ago MNBC pumped out an annual operating budget of $71.8 million that included a staggering 47% increase in staffing and training costs to more than $20 million and a huge $2.4 million for travel and meeting costs – a jump of 500% , and now they are asking the province for $84.2 million.” The BC Métis Leader said, “What world are these people living in?”
Ms. Morin Dal Col said, “MNBC is spending money like there’s no tomorrow, and they need to be held responsible for every dollar spent.”
